Royal Government Turns Focus to Protecting Foreign Workers

PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government of Cambodia has set out three main points to provide services to protect the rights and protect the interests of workers abroad.

The three policies include strengthening the quality of and access to services by facilitating Cambodian embassies to work closely with migrant worker support centers, reviewing private recruitment agencies to ensure their effectiveness and legitimacy, and providing support and convenience through the facilitation of documents, legal protection, emergency interventions and regular visits.

As the chair of ASEAN in 2022, Cambodia initiated the Declaration on the Mobility of Benefits to ensure social security benefits were accessible to ASEAN workers living abroad. Over the last five years, the Ministry of Labor has coordinated to problem solve in a total of 14,851 cases. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Labor provided medical and food assistance to disadvantaged workers in Thailand.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has worked to strengthen and expand cooperation with host countries by expanding additional employment opportunities to about 1.3 million people abroad and remittances of about $2.7 billion dollars per year.

More than 1.3 million Cambodians work abroad including 1,231,508 in Thailand, 49,738 in South Korea, 22,621 in Malaysia, 16,562 in Japan, 851 in Singapore, 215 in Hong Kong and 11 in Saudi Arabia.
